Listening to my Body and Unwelcome Snow

One thing I'm really trying to focus on in my training is listening to my body.

When I woke up this morning to go to the gym and get a run in, my body (mostly my stomach) said something like this to me:

"Aimee, please don't do this to me again. You jostled me around on your run yesterday and then we both felt like crap for the rest of the day, remember?"

So I listened, and got some extra rest instead. Probably necessary.

Later I listened to it again when it told me I should go to Bruegger's for lunch rather than eat the soup I brought. My body has really good ideas sometimes.

Southwest Minnesota got dumped on today. For those of you who may not know, we have been having an extremely mild winter. Like, no snow on Christmas mild. Like, 55 degrees in January mild.

And now it's -10 degrees with lots and lots of snow. I knew winter would hit us eventually, but I was kinda hoping we could just skip it and go straight to spring. I'm really not looking forward to clearing my car off after work...

Lately I've been daydreaming about things I can buy with my tax return (maybe a little premature, seeing as we haven't even gotten all of our W-2s yet). The top two things on my list are:

1) New running shoes
2) Garmin Forerunner GPS watch

Right now I'm running in the Asics Gel-Nimbus 12s, and I really like them, but I might switch to another brand (Brooks or Mizuno, most likely). We'll see. As for the Garmin, I like this one:

Running clothes and accessories are kind of my weakness. Some women like to buy fancy make-up, some like to get their hair done... just give me a new pair of Nike Tempo shorts, and I'll be a happy camper.

Ben's going up to the Twin Cities for "Boys Night Out" tomorrow night, so some of my lab mates and I are having "Girls Night In" at my place. Some pizza, some wine, some cards, maybe some impromptu snow angel-making... who knows what kind of crazy shenanigans we'll get into :)

Oh, and speaking of Ben, he just started his own blog! What a copycat, I know... he wishes he could be as cool as me ;) Seriously though, he's hilarious. Check it out: Words with Ben

Do you have any big plans for the weekend?

What shoes are you currently running in?

What is your weakness when it comes to spending money?

  1. We're going to palm springs this weekend. I'm not currently running, but Max and I walk everyday and I still wear my running shoes (asics...I love!) and I can't wait to get back into running! My shopping weaknesses is baby boy clothes;). Love your blog Aimee! Keep up the good work!

  3. I celebrated 1 year with my girlfriend last night :) Outside of that, catching up with a friend from high school who is in town today. Running wise I'm doing a 5 mile half marathon pace run today and a 12 miler tomorrow.

Since I work for Nike, I'm always trying out a new shoe. My go to has been the Pegasus, I love it! I do my track/speed workouts in the lunaracer.

I'm right there with you. Spent my fair share of money on running gear! I am loving the Nike sport watch gps, like it more than i liked the garmin 305. I LOVE racing, I feel like i spend a lot just on entry fees, plus the travel expenses.

  4. Yay for anniversaries! :) I feel like mine and Ben's first wedding anniversary will be here before we know it!

12 miles sounds so good right now! I can't wait to get my mileage back up. Baby steps...

I tried the Pegasus when I was training for my first half, and wasn't a huge fan... but that might also be because a year later, I found out I was buying my running shoes ONE WHOLE SIZE too small! I'll for sure have to check out the Lunar line for some speedwork shoes!

Do you have to buy a footpod for the Nike sport watch? I'll definitely look into that one too. Brand doesn't matter to me, as long as it does what it's supposed to!

  5. Wow that is crazy about the shoe size! Finding the right shoe is hard, once you find the right one it's hard to switch :)

With the Nike+ Sportwatch you don't NEED to use the footpod, because it has a GPS. However, you can use one which is nice if you ever find yourself running indoors on the Treadmill, because you can still track your runs!

  6. I know right? I was like "Ohhh... that's why I have all those blisters on my toes." I'm such a genius sometimes.

After seeing the price difference and reading some reviews, I'm definitely leaning towards the Nike+. Thanks for the input, Mike! :)

  7. I am running in a Kohls clearance special $8 LA gear shoe... Part of what attracted me to start running is that it is a cheap way to stay fit. All I needed to start was my $8 shoes, free podcasts, and access to the outdoors. Now that I've stuck with it I slowly upgrade the gear with the new Ipod Nano and gym membership... and hopefully new shoes very soon.

  8. RM, we need to take you running shoe shopping very soon! I don't think I've heard of LA Gear shoes since I had the velcro-strap light up ones when I was 6. Translation: YOU NEED NEW SHOES! :)

Oh, and don't forget about your fancy gym bag- another key upgrade!

    1. I wish they were the light up ones, I think it would give people the illusion that I was running faster!
